“Biomedical Photonics” Course Description
The Biomedical Photonics is a hot research topic in the international biomedical and optic communities in recent years and International Biomedical Optics Society (IBOS) has been founded. With the development of biotechnology, biomedical analysis required more sensitive, rapid and easy operation. Biomedical Photonics has a unique advantage in the various fields of tissue imaging, molecular imaging, gene sequencing, and biochips due to its contactless, sensitive and easy handling. Advanced Biomedical Photonics technology and its application will provide new technologies for biomedical research and clinical diagnostics in the next decade.
To fulfill the demand of the Disciplinary and industrial development and industrial development, the training of highly qualified personnel with relevant knowledge background is imperative. Some famous universities such as Harvard University, MIT, and University of California have set up the Biomedical Photonics discipline and regarded it as an important part of the biomedical engineering. Xi'an Jiaotong University attaches great importance to the construction of the Biomedical Photonics disciplines. The research team, led by Professor Zhenxi Zhang dedicated to research in the field of biomedical photonics, is also one of the pioneers in the direction of biomecial Photonics. In 1999, “Laser-Tissue Interactions Fundamentals and Applications” was translated by Professor Zhenxi Zhang, and it has used as the textbook for graduate students major in laser medical or biomedical optics in domestic universities. For cultivating students in this new discipline, “Biomedical Photonics” course was opened in Xi'an Jiaotong University, mainly for graduate students, with Professor Zhenxi Zhang is the major lecturer.
In order to improve the quality of teaching, Professor Zhenxi Zhang organized the translation of foreign textbooks. In 2004 and 2005, the teaching materials “Molecular Photonics” and “Laser-Tissue Interactions Fundamentals and Applications (3rd edition)” were translated and revised. However, due to differences of disciplinary backgrounds directly translated textbooks were unsatisfactory after trial. For this reason, the textbooks had to be reorganized for our students and the academic characteristics. In 2008, with the support of XJTU and Science Press, the “Biomedical Photonics New Technology and Application” edited by Professor Zhang was published. In the semester of 2008-2009, the course “Biomedical Photonics” was opened in the curriculum of undergraduate students.
We summarized the teaching experiences of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, such as "Introduction to the Life Sciences", "Optical Medical Instrument", "The Interaction of Laser and Biological Tissue" and “Biophysics”, etc. Based on the integration of course content and experimental resources, we reviewed and summarized a more effective and comprehensive teaching methods of Biomedical Photonics. The theoretical studies are mainly based on the textbook “Biomedical Photonics New Technology and Application” (because of the good teaching effect, this material won the second prize of Xi'an Jiaotong University the 12th excellent textbook contest on October 28, 2011). We opened the optical tweezers and other biomedical photonics experiments to complement the theoretical studies. Furthermore we encourage students to visit high-tech enterprises to explore teaching methods based on the combination of industry, study and research. In order to improve the quality of teaching, we invited foreign professors to our class for a series of lectures. Teachers in learning not only helps to grasp the course content, and to deepen the understanding of the association between the course contents; students through learning, inspired more curiosity and interest in learning the disciplines. Frequent international exchanges and cooperation had played an important role in promoting the Biomedical Photonics discipline development and student cultivation.
After nearly a decade of effort, the course "Biomedical Photonics” is gradually becoming mature. We believe that, under the efforts of all the teachers in the teaching group with the support of the departments at all levels, this course will become a provincial and even national quality course.
